The Importance of Meditation and its Impact on Mental Health

During a time when my depression spiked, and I had difficulty being happy with myself, I was lucky enough to be offered guidance by the Woman who would later become my Mentor. She suggested meditation as a way to deal with the overwhelming despair I felt. I was skeptical of its benefits at the time, but I was determined try anything to make myself feel better

With no experience in meditation I turned to the use of guided meditation videos found online. I followed the directions spoken to me in a soothing voice and soon found myself obtaining what I thought was unobtainable at the time. Peace of mind. It is amazing how much 10 minutes of stillness and deep breathing can do to clear your mind and push aside the overwhelming feelings that put you in that situation to begin with. Once you get a glimpse of what it will feel like to be happy again, you will continue to seek out that happiness; and while it is easy to fall back into a slump, being able to use meditation when you notice yourself slipping is an extremely valuable resource and one that has kept me in a positive state of mind when I needed it.

Meditation takes place in both the mind and the body. It Increases calmness and physical relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness, and enhancing overall health and well-being. Mind and body practices focus on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior. By using these techniques you can not only improve your state of mind, but also find relaxation in the muscles throughout your body.

One application of this in BDSM for me is using a guided meditation video to relieve the anxiety I feel when I’m eager to have sexual pleasure, but I am not allowed to act on this impulse. Having a moment to clear to my head and allow someone to guide me through a process of relaxation is a great way to move on from those desires and maintain the integrity my Domme has entrusted me to uphold.

While there are many ways to meditate, there are several similarities between these forms. Typically, a quiet place is required. One that is void of as many distractions as possible. A comfortable position is also a staple in meditation. Sitting, laying down or even walking can be an effective way to clear your mind and focus on relaxation. Focusing your attention on a specific concept is also important. It can be a set of words, an object that brings you calmness such as a lake or cloud. My preference is a focus on breathing. Finally, an open attitude is very much needed to meditate effectively. If you are not prepared to seriously give meditation a shot, you will most likely not find the peace of mind you are searching for.
